How to cook rice for fried rice and pulao?


Basmati is a variety of long, slender-grained aromatic rice which is traditionally from  India. It is used to make biryani, fried rice and pulao in Indian households and restaurants. The key in making the perfect fried rice/ pulao lies in cooking rice to the right consistency without breaking the grains. Come, let’s see how to cook the perfect basmati rice at home with easy method and step by step pictures.

For cooking rice:

  1. Basmati Rice- 1.5 cups
  2. Water- 2.25 cups
  3. Salt- 1/2 tsp
  4. Oil- 1 tsp


1.  Add basmati rice in a vessel and add 2 cups of water to the it and wash thoroughly to remove impurities and excess starch. Drain water completely and set aside.

2. Add 2.25 cups of water to the washed basmati rice along with oil and salt and rest for 30 minutes. You can also add it directly to pressure cooker but be very careful not to burn the rice while cooking, so placing it in vessel is the safe method.

3. Place the vessel inside pressure cooker and pressure cook for 2 whistles.

4. After the whistle releases, fluff with fork to separate grains and transfer the rice on a large plate and cool down completely before use. You can refrigerate the rice plate for 20 minutes for faster cooling.
