Restaurant style Tomato Rice | Thakkali Sadham


Tomato Rice is a popular Indian variety rice made with tomatoes cooked with flavorful spices and mixed with long grains of cooked basmati rice and served with raita (yogurt) or curry or papad varieties. It is made commonly in Indian homes and popular lunch menu in Indian restaurants.  Come, let’s see how to make this perfect and tasty recipe at home with easy method and step by step pictures

  1. Basmati rice- 1 cup
  2. Water- 1.5 cups
  3. Onion- 1
  4. Tomato- 3
  5. Green chilli- 3
  6. Ginger garlic paste- 1 tsp
  7. Turmeric- a pinch
  8. Salt- as required
  9. Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
  10. Coriander powder- 1 tsp
  11. Coriander leaves- 1 tbsp

To temper 

  1. Oil- 1.5 tbsp
  2. Mustard- 1 tsp
  3. Bay leaf- 2
  4. Urad dal- 1 tsp
  5. Channa dal- 1 tsp
  6. Fennel seeds – 1 tsp
  7. Curry leaves- 1 sprig


1. Preparation: Chop onion, tomatoes and coriander leaves finely and slit the green chillies and set  aside.

2. Cook Rice: Soak basmati rice in water for 30 minutes and pressure cook for 2 whistles. After the whistle releases, fluff with fork to separate grains and transfer the rice on a large plate and cool down completely (You can refrigerate for 20 minutes for faster cooling). You can also make it with leftover basmati rice.

3. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and bay leaf and allow to crackle. Add the other items under “to temper”.

4. When the dal turns golden, add green chillies and onion and sauté till golden.

5. Add ginger garlic paste and sauté till raw smell leaves.

6. Add the tomato along with turmeric powder and salt and cook till it turns soft and mushy.

7. Add red chilli powder and coriander powder and cook for 2 minutes in low flame.

8. Add coriander leaves and switch off.

12. Finally, add the cooked basmati rice and mix well. Serve hot with any curry or raita. Delicious and tasty tomato rice is ready to eat.
